SFC Capital is the UK and Europe's most active seed investor, and in the top three globally (Pitchbook, 2020), combining an angel syndicate with its own funds to invest in SEIS- and EIS-qualifying businesses across a wide range of sectors — from biotech to fintech, AR/VR to D2C retail. In the spring of 2020 it received a £10 million commitment from British Business Investments (a subsidiary of British Business Bank) as part of BBI's Regional Angels programme, in support of SFC's mission to back promising early-stage companies from every corner of the UK.
CEO Stephen Page founded, grew, and exited several startups as an entrepreneur in his own right before turning to investing. With SFC he was one of the earliest investors into Onfido, providing the fintech with its first funding outside friends and family, and he is still involved in every deal done. From day one, he has been an outspoken critic of the UK government's Future Fund, which he sees as a VC stitch-up to support their own portfolios and get better terms on new deals at the expense of supporting "true startups” — the pre-VC companies that are most vulnerable to the economic shock of the pandemic.
This event will cover:
the importance of supporting startup ecosystems in regions all around countries, not just capitals/ big tech hubs;
investing at an early stage;
the governments’ financial support for startups through the pandemic.
