Conflicting Missions: Competition and Innovation in Britain

How should we regulate the tech giants? A forthcoming report from The Entrepreneurs Network and the International Center for Law & Economics, discusses some of the potential dangers to startups and competition posed by the Competition and Markets Authority’s new Digital Markets Unit, and makes proposals about how to reduce these.

In the report, authors Sam Bowman, Sam Dumitriu and Aria Babu highlight the trade-offs involved in the DMU’s “management of monopoly” approach, which includes measures to make it far more difficult for startups to be acquired by big tech firms and other rules that could end up stymying competition in digital markets. This launch panel will consider issues such as how to make sure mergers and takeovers are working to the benefit of consumers and markets overall, what the objectives of the DMU should be, and how to promote competition in tech more generally.

Our panel features leading experts on competition and innovation policy. They include UK Anti-Corruption Champion John Penrose MP; Will Hayter, Senior Director, Digital Markets Unit at Competition and Markets Authority; Camilla de Coverly Veale, Head of Tech Regulation, Coadec; and John Fingleton, former Office for Fair Trading CEO and founder of Fingleton Associates.

This is sure to be a lively panel on a topic relevant to entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors.
