The Entrepreneurs Network and MDRx will be hosting a discussion on how a Labour government would build trust in AI through regulation without curbing innovation, and how this novel technology can be used to enhance public services.
The potential capabilities of AI and their consequences are still uncertain. However, almost everyone seems to agree that we will need to prepare for what is to come. This will be a balancing act. Policymakers should not block the positive potential of AI or curb innovation with a premature regulatory framework. But they will also need to safeguard society from the potentially harmful use of this technology. For that reason, the entrepreneurs who are developing AI should have a critical voice in this debate. Their experience must be regarded as guidance on what this evolving technology can do and how policymakers should respond.
At this roundtable entrepreneurs and policymakers will discuss the possible impact of a dedicated AI regulatory body and increased transparency and reporting thresholds, how would a Labour Government balance safety and innovation in AI, the role of AI in key services and how Labour would engage with tech companies.
Benedict Macon-Cooney, Chief Policy Strategist for the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, will be leading the discussion. Ben is an expert in economic and technology policy with a special emphasis on artificial intelligence, biotech and clean tech. Among other accolades he co-authored TBI’s New National Purpose series with Tony Blair and William Hague. Prior to joining TBI in 2013, Ben worked for HM Treasury on its response to the 2008 global financial crisis.
