This virtual roundtable with will consider how we can support micro-businesses, small-businesses and the self-employed to meet their growth ambitions at Budget 2022. It is part of our Small Business Forum that we run with Enterprise Nation.

Attendees views will feed into our report.

The discussion will be wide-ranging, but we’ve identified three issues:

  1. There are strong inflationary pressures across the UK economy due to supply-chain disruption, worker shortages, and a rising tax burden . In the long-term, this situation will improve but in the short-to-medium term could lead to unnecessary failures among new micro-and small businesses unless some form of relief is granted.

  2. For entrepreneurs with ambitions to grow, there is a growing gap in equity funding for the smallest companies. Unless this gap is filled we risk losing out on new high-growth, innovative businesses.

  3. The pandemic has seen a fall in the number of self-employed people. In part, this may be due to better opportunities for employees, but it also might reflect fears around insecurity and a lack of support from the government. What is clear is that the attraction of flexibility and ownership hasn’t gone away. What’s needed is support to turn that ambition into reality.
