      On Upside-Down Management

      John Timpson was born in 1943 and was educated at Oundle and Nottingham University. After a six month Graduate Training Scheme with J Clark at Street, he joined the family footwear business William Timpson Limited, becoming the Director responsible for buying in 1970.

      Following the acquisition of the Company by the UDS Group in 1973, he became Managing Director of leather and fur retailers, Swears & Wells Limited and in 1975 was appointed Managing Director of William Timpson his original family business.

      In 1983 he led a £42m management buyout of the Company which had become part of the Hanson Trust. In 1987 he sold the shoe shops to rival retailer George Oliver and subsequently concentrated on building up the shoe repairing and key cutting business, which he has diversified into engraving, watch repairs, dry cleaning and photo processing.

      In September 1995 he acquired the 120 shop Automagic chain and in April 2003 bought Minit UK which added another 200 shoe repair shops. In June 2008 the company acquired over 40 Sainsbury concessions, trading as Persil Services, and in December 2008 bought 187 shops branded Kick and Max Spielmann. Timpson now has over 800 branches nationwide with a turnover of £150m and profits of over £10m. It is a private business wholly owned by John Timpson and his family.

      In 2000 he wrote a book ‘Dear James,’ which passes on to his son the lessons learned in 30 years as a Chief Executive. He describes his business philosophy in his latest book ‘How to Ride a Giraffe.

      For 10 years he has had his own column under the name ‘Timpo’ in the magazine Real Business and is a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph. In 2004 he was awarded the CBE in the Birthday Honours List for Services to the Retail Sector.

      Why Britain Shouldn’t Shut the Door to International Students

      Lord Karan Bilimoria CBE, DL is the founder of Cobra Beer, Chairman of the Cobra Beer Partnership Limited and of Molson Coors Cobra India, both joint ventures with the global brewing company, Molson Coors. He is the Founding Chairman of the UK India Business Council, a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London, a former Chancellor of Thames Valley University (now the University of West London); he was the youngest University Chancellor in the UK when appointed. In 2014, he was appointed as the 7th Chancellor of the University of Birmingham.

      Karan is Senior Non-Executive Director of the Booker Group PLC, the FTSE 250 Company of Booker Prize fame; he is one of the first two visiting entrepreneurs at the University of Cambridge; he is a founding member of the Prime Minister of India’s Global Advisory Council.

      In 2006, Karan Bilimoria was appointed the Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea, making him the first ever Zoroastrian Parsi to sit in the House of Lords. In 2008 he was awarded the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman by the President of India. He is an honorary fellow of Sidney Sussex College Cambridge and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Judge Business School, Cambridge University. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young and graduated in law from the University of Cambridge. He is also an alumnus of the Cranfield School of Management, the London Business School and the Harvard Business School.

      Lord (Howard) Flight was appointed to the House of Lords by UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, at the end of 2010. He was the Member of Parliament for Arundel and South Downs from 1997 to 2005, during which time he served as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, the support Shadow Minister to the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He led the Conservative Opposition during the Committee stages of 4 Finance Acts and the Financial Services and Markets Act.

      Now, in the House of Lords, he is part of the Conservative working Peers teams covering Europe, Treasury Affairs and Pensions and focuses on British Indian relations. He is a member of the Lords European Union Economic and Financial Affairs Committee.

      Howard has also worked for 40 years in the Financial Services industry, starting his career at Rothschilds as an Investment adviser. He was co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of Guinness Flight, formed in 1986 and acquired by Investec Asset Management in 1998, of which Howard remains a Director.

      Currently, in addition to being Chairman of the EIS Association, Howard is Chairman of CIM Investment Management, Director of Investec Asset Management, Non-Executive Director of Metro Bank, the new UK retail bank; chairman of 4 Investment Funds and a Commissioner (Board Member) of the Guernsey Financial Services.

      A Conservative Plan for Enterprise

      A serial entrepreneur, in 2000 Nadhim founded YouGov, a leading market research company which has since become famous for the accuracy of its political polling. Having started life in an office in Nadhim’s garden shed, YouGov now employs over 400 people on three continents. In 2008, he won the prestigious Ernst & Young, Entrepreneur of the Year.

      In January 2010 Nadhim stood down from YouGov to run for election as Member of Parliament for Stratford-on-Avon. Upon winning the seat, he was elected to the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, which scrutinises the impact of government policy on business.

      In 2013 Nadhim was appointed to the Prime Minister’s Policy Board with special responsibility for business and the economy.

      Toby Perkins MP is Shadow Small Business Minister. He is responsible for issues affecting small firms including access to finance, deregulation and better regulation, business support alongside regional growth and the work of Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), the pub industry and the Insolvency Service. Before his election Toby set up and ran his own small business supplying rugby clothing and equipment. He worked in the private sector for his entire career prior to entering Parliament.
