Toby Perkins became MP for Chesterfield in the General Election of 2010, overturning a Liberal Democrat majority to take back the seat for Labour by 549 votes. He is the only Labour MP to win a seat from the Liberal Democrats since 1997.
Toby and the SpireToby is currently Shadow Minister for Small Businesses within Labour’s BIS team. He is responsible for Labour’s policies on access to finance, late payments, regional growth and pubs amongst many others. Prior to this he was Shadow Minister for Children and Families and until Autumn 2010 sat on the DCLG Select Committee.
Before becoming an MP Toby was a Chesterfield Councillor and ran his own small business supplying rugby clothing, as well as being a shareholder in a social enterprise providing nursery care to one of the most deprived areas of Chesterfield. Having worked in the private sector for his entire career prior to entering Parliament Toby has a thorough understanding of the challenges facing small businesses in the current economic climate.
Since September 2015, Toby has been Shadow Minister for Defence.
